Our Program

puzzle program

At Phoenix Middle School, our program is designed to align with our core pillars—Intellectual Discipline, Global Awareness, Creative Expression, Wellness, and Character—while supporting our educational philosophy of mastery-based learning. Our flexible schedule, course blocking, and high levels of teacher collaboration are essential elements that bring our philosophy to life.

We implement a mastery-based learning system where students advance upon demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of each subject. This approach ensures deep comprehension and application of knowledge, rather than superficial coverage. Assessments are ongoing and varied, including project-based evaluations and real-world applications, providing a thorough picture of student learning.

Our innovative curriculum integrates core academic subjects with specialized programs to foster holistic development. Courses like Connections and Global Cultures encourage students to think critically and appreciate diverse perspectives, helping them understand the interconnectedness of knowledge and its practical applications. The interdisciplinary approach allows students to apply their skills in various contexts, promoting a deeper understanding of the material.

Our flexible schedule includes three blocks of instructional time from Monday through Thursday, allowing for interdisciplinary projects and in-depth exploration of subjects. This flexibility enables teachers to adjust the schedule to best support student learning, whether through extended periods for project work or focused time on specific subjects.

Creative and artistic expression are highly valued at Phoenix. Programs in visual arts, performing arts, and digital media at Phoenix and other Worthington schools provide multiple avenues for students to explore and express their creativity. We offer daily opportunities for artistic engagement, fostering students' imaginative and innovative skills.

Wellness and character development are integral parts of our program. Wellness programs focus on physical, mental, and emotional health, teaching students the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Advisory programs and community-building activities promote social relationships and character development, ensuring students grow into responsible, thoughtful, and empathetic individuals.

Global awareness is emphasized through experiences like Discovery Days and service-learning projects, which connect students with diverse cultures and their communities, fostering civic knowledge and responsibility. These hands-on experiences encourage students to apply their academic knowledge to real-world issues, enhancing their problem-solving skills and global perspective.

High levels of teacher and student collaboration are a cornerstone of our program. Teachers and students work together extensively within grade-level teams and across subject areas to continuously adapt and enhance the curriculum. This collaboration ensures a cohesive learning experience that meets the evolving needs and interests of our students.
