Phoenix provides time on Monday through Thursday for independent reading. Students and teachers read silently for twenty five minutes. Students are given the choice of genre they want to read, and there are no assignments given to them about the books they read. They are responsible for keeping a list of books that they read and writing a summary sentence each day. This type of reading increases reading stamina, develops lifetime reading habits and supports the philosophy that we are a reading community. Wonderful discussions about books being read are heard throughout the day.
